Pyracantha Bonsai

Pyracantha means “firethorn.” This is due to the fact that Pyracantha develop beautiful red berries that look like fire, but under those berries at very prickly thorns. So you must be careful when placing Pyracantha around children, pets, and you.

Pyracantha has a naturally angular growth pattern which makes them perfect for bonsai. The leaves are narrow and dark green and grow on branches with needle-like thorns. Pyracantha produce tiny, white blossoms in spring that slowly turn into pea-sized fruits that turn from red, to orange to yellow in the fall. These berries drop off as winter approaches.

The best species of Pyracantha suited for bonsai are Pyracantha augustifolia, of Chinese origin, and Pyracantha coccinea, of Mediterranean origin.

Pyracantha can be grown from seeds or cutting.

The best bonsai styles for Pyracantha are slanting styles, especially windswept and cascade.
